From a reader:

Reference your Vol 28, Issue 10, April 2015: There is an error in the recommendations; wheat bread is not good for seniors. One slice of wheat bread contains more than the daily requirement of sodium and little to no fiber. Multigrain bread is so much better.

I’m 70 and I weigh the same as I did when I left the service in 1967. I watch what I eat, and I exercise. I don’t eat wheat bread, and no corn or product with corn syrup. Pet owners don’t feed their dogs wheat or corn. Wheat and corn are only good for fattening hogs and cattle for market. Obesity is a big problem across America, people should watch and be knowledgeable of what they eat.

Dan,

Thank you for taking the time to write us. The article you are referring to is “Fight Cancer with Color,” submitted by a Hy-Vee dietitian. All of their articles end with. “The information is not intended as medical advice. Please consult a medical professional for individual advice.” This disclaimer is given because we humans are very complex beings. The list of foods given in this article contains some that interact adversely with certain medications. So this is not a list meant for everyone. As you stated, we need to be knowledgeable about what we eat.

We, at 50+Lifestyles, are pleased you shared your eating “don’ts” with us. We are glad that your diet has worked so well for you. Thank you for sharing and thank you for your service.
