PUBLISHER’S CORNER

By Eloise Graham

The Tapestry of your Life

Have you ever thought about your life being a tapestry, weaving in and out of the lives of others around you? Through the magic of social media, I have reconnected with many of my grade school and high school friends.

After high school graduation, we all went our separate ways. Some to college, some got married, some to the war (Viet Nam) others starting jobs. Four years later, I was out of college, married, started our family and moved 900 miles from home. So about the only connection I had with that past chapter of my life was through my mom sharing things with me. My husband and I went back to our 10-year reunion, but that was more like reminiscing of the high school years rather than sharing of our current lives.

As I said, through the magic of social media, I have now reconnected with many friends. Now, we see how our lives have run parallel courses, or connected in various ways throughout the past 50 years. One guy I went to kindergarten with has a daughter born one day before my daughter. And both girls were married the same year. Another classmate married the sister-in-law of my husband’s best friend’s wife. I didn’t know that until recently. All of us have many different chapters in our lives, but when revealing them, we see the intertwining of a beautiful tapestry.

Our class has had the traditional five-year reunions, but recently decided to try to meet different places with as many as can make it on a yearly basis. I attended one such mini reunion just last month. It was a great time.

The chapters of our respective lives are like kaleidoscopes, vignettes of life intermingling with one another. We share many different but similar experiences: marriage, children, job changes, homes, travels, death or divorce of the spouse, grandchildren, and for some- great grandchildren, sports, health issues, care giving, loss of a child… the list can go on. In sharing of these stories, we strengthen the fabric of the tapestry by giving one another strength.

So I urge you to reconnect with friends from days gone by and check out your own tapestry, its beauty and uniqueness.
