September Celebrations

By Eloise Graham

September is full of fun and wacky celebrations! Let’s start the month with National Cherry Popover Day. September 1 is National Cherry Popover Day! A popover is a doughy type of muffin made from egg batter. As it bakes, the dough rises to “pop over” the edge of the muffin tin and form a hollow shell. You can then fill the center with butter and jam, gravy, or a delicious cherry sauce. Cherry popovers have several health benefits. Cherries are a good source of melatonin, which can stimulate your brain and help you sleep better at night. Now that’s a reason to celebrate.

September is Better Breakfast Month. Maybe that is why the first day is Cherry Popover Day. This year, International Bacon Day is September 2. Cheese Pizza Day is the fifth and National Salami day is celebrated on the seventh. On the 12th, we celebrate Chocolate Milk Shake Day. The 14th we get two goodies: Fortune Cookie Day and National Peanut Day. On the 17th we celebrate National Apple Dumpling Day, followed on the 18th with National Cheeseburger Day. September 19th and 20th gives us National Butterscotch Pudding day and National Pepperoni Pizza Day, respectively. National Cherries Jubilee day is celebrated on the 24th.

Labor Day is a big celebration. Almost all communities have parades to commemorate the working people. This day is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of the American workers. It became a federal holiday in 1894.

Many of us celebrate Grandparent’s Day on Sunday, September 10, 2017. Marian McQuade hoped to establish a day to honor her grandparents. She began the campaign in 1970. Finally, after a lot of work and frustration she realized her dream. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day to be National Grandparents Day.

VJ Day Celebration: August 14th is the anniversary of the day Japan surrendered. August 15 was the day the surrender was announced to the world. September 2 is the date of the ceremony and formal signing of surrender. Regardless of which day you view as VJ Day, World War II was finally over.

September is designated as National Piano Month. Tickle the keys and celebrate an instrument that continues to classical, contemporary and flexible – all at the same time. The piano is an instrument that has contributed greatly to the development of music as we know it, and still continues to play a key role in modern music.

September is also National Senior Center Month. We can celebrate that Davenport, IA has one of the best senior centers in the country. So go celebrate!
