Is it More than Holiday Blues?

By Peggy Dykes

The holidays are a time of love and cheer, but for many, the winter months and the close of another year can be tough. The gloomy weather can wear on us. Family visits can prove taxing. Holiday Blues are temporary feelings of anxiety or depression that can be associated with extra stress, unrealistic expectations or even memories that accompany the season. Symptoms might include fatigue, frustration, sadness, loneliness or isolation. Short-term problems must still be taken seriously because they can lead to long-term mental health conditions.

Here are some proactive tips: Stick to a normal routine and get enough sleep. Don’t isolate yourself and spend time with supportive, caring people. Eat and drink in moderation. Don’t drink alcohol if you are feeling down. Get in some exercise, even if it’s only taking a short walk. Set reasonable holiday expectations. Keep things simple and find ways to relax by doing something you enjoy.

However, if you continue to feel down it could be depression which is serious, but treatable. It goes beyond the usual holiday stress and can be caused by medical problems, chronic pain, poor diet; loss of a loved one; a move to a care facility; lack of exercise; change in routine and even general frustrations with aging.

Talk to your doctor if you experience one or more of these symptoms constantly for more than two weeks.

  • Inability to sleep, or excessive sleeping
  • Significant loss or gain of weight
  • Difficulty thinking or indecisiveness
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Severe fatigue or loss of energy
  • Anxiety and/or anger
  • Loss of interest in daily activities
  • Lack of attention to personal care and hygiene
  • Irresponsible behavior, thoughts about death and suicide.

Be aware of how you feel and get the help you need to stay healthy. Family caregivers can be instrumental in getting the help needed for the individuals they care for.
