Vander Veer Botanical Park and Conservatory

Information from Vander Veer
Botanical Park and Conservatory

Right in the middle of Davenport is a 33-acre lush greenspace known as Vander Veer Botanical Park. This gem has many facets: there are the Hosta Glade and Rose Garden; the fountain and Grand Allee; the pond and playground; the Old World Gardens and the raised flower beds; the Conservatory and the greenouses. The front cover of this edition of 50+ Lifestyles features a recent photograph from the Conservatory.

Almost thirty years ago, the park was falling into disrepair. People were avoiding it. A group of dedicated volunteers that wanted to see the park revitalized formed a group called The Friends of Vander Veer. With the help of the City of Davenport (the park is city owned) and the Historical Society (the park is registered on the Davenport Register of Historical Properties) the Friends were able to restore the Grand Allee, reconstruct the fountain into a working water feature, and add walk ways, benches and lighting. Now the park is bustling all year long with families enjoying this space.

The conservatory changes its displays with the seasons, and no two years are exactly the same. It makes for a nice place to wonder through, enjoying the beauty of flowers and plants. Many programs are conducted there to teach the young about the beauty and power of growing things, often a hands-on experience. One of the ways the Friends raises money for its needs is with the upcoming Annual Plant Sale. The Friends of Vander Veer, a non-profit organization will be hosting this sale on April 27, 28 and 29. The sale features a premier selection of annuals, perennials and tropicals. Volunteers will be on hand to help guests select their plants. Hours are: Friday, April 27 – 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 28 – 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 29 – 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Potting Parties will be held in conjunction with the sale. Choose from three sessions. Plant experts will teach guests how to plant, choosing from the great selection. Bring yoru own soil or purchase soil there. Class cost is $10.00 plus soil and plants. Call (563) 323-3298 to register.

Funds raised through this support the beauty and education programs at Vander Veer Botanical Park. This park is a favorite for thousands of annual visitors from the Quad Cities and beyond.
