Identity Theft – Were You a Victim? What Should You Do?

1. Call the companies where you know fraud occurred. Ask for the fraud department. Explain that someone stole your identity. Ask to close or freeze your accounts. Change all of your logins, passwords and PINS for your accounts.

2. Place a fraud alert and get your credit report. A fraud alert is free. Contact one of the following three credit bureaus. That company must tell the other two.

  • Equifax.com/CreditReportAssistance 1-888-766-0008
  • Experian.com/fraudalert 1-888-397-3742
  • TransUnion.com/fraud 1-800-680-7289

3.Get your free credit report right away. Go to annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228. Review. Make note of anything you don’t recognize.

4. Report identity theft to the FTC. Go to ftc.gov/complaint or call 1-877-438-4338

5. File a report with your local police department
