September: The Sapphire Month

By Eloise Graham

If I were to mention the color blue, you would think of a certain shade or tone of blue, but it might not even be close to the color I mean. Take navy, for instance. Do you think of a blue that is so dark it is almost black, or do you think of a lighter shade, sometimes called Admiral blue. The same with pale blue, powder blue, light blue or pastel blue. To one person, they might all be the same but to someone else, they are four distinct shades of blue. I might call it powder blue and you call it pale blue. BUT, if I mention sapphire blue, we all visualize the same thing. That deep but vivid, rich jewel tone of blue. Well, September’s birthstone is that deep, vivid, rich blue jewel – the Sapphire.

September is also the birthday month of my oldest granddaughter. She turns 21 this year. She shares her birthday month with the following:

  • 1890 Agatha Christie, mystery writer
  • 1905 Greta Garbo, actress
  • 1907 Gene Autry, actor and singer “ the Singing Cowboy “
  • 1909 Al Capp, the cartoonist who created “Li’l Abner”
