January in the Hilltop Campus Village Past, Current and Future

It is quite fitting that this article is written in January. January is named for the Roman god, Janus. He was the keeper of the gate or the doorway. He had the ability to see the past while at the same time view the future.

Well, the Hilltop Campus Village is a gateway or corridor in Davenport, connecting Downtown Davenport with the neighbors and businesses to the north, including other towns and communities. More than just a corridor to traverse, it is a destination.

Janus invites you to take a close look at the Hilltop Campus Village.

The Hilltop Campus area is rich in its history. Palmer College of Chiropractic, St. Ambrose and Central High school have educated many students for generations.

Many of the churches, offering a wide variety of architectural styles, have a rich history in the development of the community.

Many businesses have flourished here. Some include: KWQC TV 6, originally WOC Radio and TV; Mary Sue’s, with her delicious pies; Rock’s Anchor Grill, with his wonderful breakfasts; Greatest Grains, a fresh, health food store that was promoting fresh, healthy organic foods before it was the current fad; and Halligan-McCabe-De Freis Funeral Home, family owned and community oriented. A beautiful home of outstanding architecture and steeped in the history of St. Ambrose is located at 1527 Brady. Formerly known as the “Bishop’s House” it is now designated as St. Ambrose University Alumni House. These are just a few of the “old-timers” that call Hilltop Campus Village home.

So many of the businesses, institutions and activities are building on the past and soaring into the future. Let’s take a peek at what lies ahead.

In 2018, Hilltop Campus Village nominated J. B. Young Opportunity Center for the Best Development Award. This award is given to express the fact that smart land use and sustainable communities are more than just constructed buildings. 1000 Friends of Iowa gave eight awards statewide. Scott Tunnicliff, Director of the Hilltop Campus Village, a Main Street Iowa partner, stated, “We are working with the Davenport Community School District to help integrate all of the re-uses of the properties as amenities for the entire community. The district has done a great job of renovating the interior and exterior and seeking tenants for the building.” Watch as the Center flourishes in the future.

A Hoop House, a community garden, is being erected at 15th and Scott Street. There will be a big announcement concerning this project later on this month.

Cupid is once again coming to the Hilltop Campus Village in February. Zeke’s Island Cafe will be offering a special sweetheart meal on Thursday 14, Friday 15 and Saturday 16. His sweetheart dinner hours will be from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

There will be a new community festival in May. Janus can see that it could be a four or five block long party festival, live music, car shows, mini parades, outdoor eating, and an outdoor, big screen movie at dusk.

Come visit the Hilltop Campus Village and see what Janus sees. He sees a prosperous year.
