  • 1690   The clarinet is invented
  • 1790   President George Washington delivered the first State of the Union address
  • 1800   Millard Fillmore (13th US President) was born
  • 1820   Anne Bronte (Author) is born
  • 1870   The first use of a donkey to symbolize the Democratic Party in America appeared in a cartoon in Harper’s Weekly, criticizing former secretary of war Edwin Stanton with the caption, “A Live Jackass Kicking a Dead Lion.”
  • 1880   Thomas Edison files a patent for the light bulb
  • 1890   The first Tournament of Roses is held in Pasadena, California
  • 1890  Nellie Bly completes her round-the-world journey in 72 days

  • 2010 Haiti hit by massive magnitude 7.0 earthquake with a death toll of over 200,000
  • 2010 Toyota recalls 2.3 million cars in U.S.
