We Have Something to CROW About in the Hilltop Campus Village

Hilltop Campus Village district attains major investment milestones.

Qualifies again for National Main Street America accreditation.

“This is an important barometer of private sector interest.” said Hilltop Campus Village Director Scott Tunnicliff. “It also reflects the interest in reinvestment from district institutions, confidence within the business community in the district’s future, plus the importance of redevelopment, and historic preservation.”

Hilltop Campus Village Board President Robert Lee added. “It is important to note that, while tracking of private sector investment is not a race among districts, reaching this milestone this soon in our organization’s life was not expected when we started, either by our organization or Main Street Iowa. It speaks well for those entities owning commercial, residential and institutional property in the district.”

Kelly Young of Russell had this to add: “The public sector has played an important role in this achievement. Volunteers see infrastructure improvements and recognize this area is coming back. The street lights, the improved roadways, the signage, all add value. But we are far from finished.”

Kelly is the V.P. of the Hilltop Campus Village Board, and chaired the 2019-2020 National Main Street America Accreditation self-evaluation.

“This notification and report is valuable to our continuing efforts,” said Kelly. “We use this as technical assistance to continually improve.”

A Main Street Iowa program is eligible for National Main Street Accreditation by achieving a minimum of 70 of 100 indicator points for each National Standards and submitting required materials. This year total indicator points attained by the Hilltop Campus Village were 95 of 100 points possible.

“This score doesn’t make us complacent in the least. The report shows areas where improvements can be made,” added Director Tunnicliff. “We are fortunate to have a cadre of newer board members, who want to become more knowledgeable about Main Street Iowa, through webinars and on-site orientations. We also will continue to ramp up our focus on the importance of historic preservation, utilization of action plans and attaining a stronger physical presence in the district.”

Main Street Iowa annual awards ceremony will be April 3, 2020 in Des Moines. Hilltop Campus Village will receive recognition there. The program will also be recognized with other nationally accredited programs at the Opening Session of the 2020 Main Street Now Conference in Dallas, TX. which will be May 18-20, 2020
