CASI Provides Grief Support During Pandemic

By: Kathy Malmloff, Director of Senior Services

When a loved one dies, those left to mourn often find themselves entangled in a complex web of emotions and reactions. The same can be said for those who are at home during a pandemic. The emotions felt during both life-altering experiences can be overwhelming, frightening, and painful, which leaves many helpless and lost. But you don’t have to go through these grieving processes alone.

CASI’s Grief Support Group has helped hundreds of Quad Citizens work through their grieving since it began 20 years ago. Today, the group continues to help not only those who’ve lost a loved one but is also helping those who are struggling with the changes that have come with COVID-19.

Under the leadership of Senior Advocate Vicky Ertel, MSW, a seasoned social worker, CASI’s Grief Support Group offers participants a friendly, caring and relaxed experience with people who share the same feelings and concerns. “We are seeing that the longer the pandemic remains in our community the more fear, anxiety, and concerns for unknown are developing,” said Ertel. “Our group is here to provide older Quad Citizens an opportunity to connect with people who have similar emotions and reactions and to work through them together, which can provide some with peace of mind.”

CASI’s Grief Support Group meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. The group currently meets at 9:30 a.m., at the Family Restaurant, 902 W Kimberly Rd, Davenport, IA. This is a FREE community service program; however, participants are required to sign-up in advance by calling 563-386-7477, Ext. 227, and leaving a voicemail message for Vicky Ertel. Space is limited to 6 people and participants are responsible for their own food and beverage costs.
