A Pause for Poetry

By Gary Heath
Poet in Residence for 50+ Lifestyles.

The Fish That Swam Away

The heat, so cruel, so torrid,

Tortured us last summer,

Slathered us in unrelenting

Sweat. It was a summer to

Forget. The lake at our cabin

Glared silver in the sun, its

Clear, crystalline, dark blue

Depths revealing moss-grown

Fallen trees and sleek brown

Trout taking their ease,

Gliding in and out. Cool

Down there we surmised

And rowed our ancient,

Wooden rowboat out to

Dive in, to refresh, and

Escape. We competed to

Touch the sunken trees,

A very challenging game,

Enjoyable though rather

Odd, yet really not, for

Heat in extremis fevers

The brain. So sad the fish

Swam away. We hoped to

Meet them, at least see

Them eye to eye.
