What Should I Expect at my Hearing Test Appointment?

When you first enter the clinic, you will check in with a receptionist, just like when you go to see your family physician. You will probably have paperwork to fill out, including a list of questions to answer about your hearing. When your name is called, the evaluation can begin!

The first step is usually an interview about your concerns regarding your hearing health and any symptoms you are experiencing. Your audiologist will look in your ears and address any issues that may be seen there, such as wax.

A hearing evaluation is actually a battery of smaller tests that allow us to characterize your hearing.

Hearing tests are performed while you are wearing either headphones or earphones that go into your ears like earplugs. You will go through a series of tests during which you will listen to soft beeps and quiet words and louder words. You may listen for loud beeps or speech in noise. You may have to wear a special headband around you head and listen for more beeps; this is called bone conduction testing. Exactly which tests are performed may vary, depending on your hearing and your concerns. Instructions will be given before each test, but if you’re unclear about what you should do, be sure to ask for clarification.

The hearing evaluation generally lasts 20-25 minutes, after which your results will be explained and recommendations will be given. This is a good time to ask questions! If there is anything you’re unsure about, feel free to ask for more information. You should leave the appointment with an understanding about your hearing and a plan in place for continued care.
