Buds and Burrows Open in April

April is derived from the verb “aperire” which means “to open.” During the month of April, the trees and many flowers begin to bloom or open.

The smaller animals that hibernate start opening their burrows and come out of their winter home.

For those born in April the diamond is their birthstone. It represents innocence. The birth flower, there are two, is either the Sweet Pea or the Daisy. The daisy also represents innocence, purity and true love. The sweet pea is a way to say goodbye, send good wishes or merely convey a thank you.

April is a great month for meteor showers. One of which is the Lyrids meteor shower, appearing from April 16th to April 26th each year. Another one is called the Eta Aquariids meteor shower. It can be seen from April 21st on.

Three notable historical people born in April are Leonardo Da Vinci, Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth II.

On a tragic note, the Titanic hit an iceberg and sunk on April 15, 1912.

George Washington was inaugurated as the First President of the United States on April 30, 1789.

April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 was launched. It ran into difficulties a couple days later. “Houston, we’ve had a problem here” was a transmission. A very famous line, but often misquoted. “Houston, we have a problem” is often the misquote.

April is also the month that birds migrate north and settle down for the summer to mate.

The first battle of the Revolutionary War, Lexington and Concord, broke out on April 19, 1775.

And for you car buffs out there, the 1964 Ford Mustang was unveiled on April 17. The price tag was a whopping $2,368.
