Ask the Audiologist

How can I improve communication with my loved one?

Hearing is an important part of the communication and interaction we have with others. Changes in hearing ability can impact daily communication and can lead to frustrations both for the individual who has hearing difficulties and for those around them.

If changes in hearing are being experienced, a hearing test is the first step to addressing the issue. The audiologist will perform comprehensive testing to identify hearing loss and make appropriate recommendations for next steps.

Regardless of the degree of hearing loss one is experiencing, using good communication strategies is always important. When hearing loss is present, simple changes to how we communicate can make communication significantly more successful.

Communication Tips

  • Speak slowly and clearly at a normal loudness level. Do not shout.
  • When something is not heard or understood, try rephrasing your statement.
  • Say the person’s name and get their attention prior to talking.
  • Help the listener by providing visual cues. Look directly at the person while speaking and keep your hands away from your mouth.
  • Avoid speaking to someone across long distances. A distance of 3-6 feet is best for listening and lip reading. Do not try to talk to someone from a different room.
  • Eliminate as much background noise as possible.
  • Hearing aids cannot return hearing to normal. Even with hearing aids, an individual may not understand everything you say.

If you are noticing changes in your hearing, contact your audiologist for an evaluation.
