The urban apartment boom has certainly made its presence known in Davenport for some time, but finally there is now a community like no other for adults. Situated on the bluffs overlooking Davenport’s downtown and west side with incredible views of the Mississippi River, that community is called the Gold Coast Apartments. Previously used as the Kahl Home, the property has recently been converted to independent living apartments.

Local developer Chris Ales partnered with businessmen David and Donald J. Necker as investors in the Gold Coast Apartments. Their historic renovation converted the Kahl Mansion and adjacent addition into forty-nine apartments with upscale finishes such as porcelain and hard wood flooring, premium cabinets and trim carpentry, stainless appliances, and quartz countertops. Equally impressive amenities include common areas located in the mansion, stunning views of our famous river, a truly unique and fully equipped fitness room, and elevators throughout. Accoutrements range from contemporary modern to tasteful elegance in the mansion apartments. For those looking to downsize into a comfortable and classic setting, the Gold Coast Apartments have something for every taste.

When you visit The Gold Coast Apartments, aside from the breathtaking river views, one can’t help but be awe struck at the history contained within. A little background for those that might not be aware:  The mansion was built between 1912 and 1914 by Henry “Hummer” Kahl, thanks to his success in ventures that included railways and infrastructure. In 1954, Henry’s daughter Elizabeth and her husband V.O. Figge donated the mansion to the Catholic Diocese of Davenport for charitable purposes. The Carmelite Sisters initially used the mansion as a nursing home, and in 1963 the modern portion of the building, as well as the chapel, were added on to help meet their increasing demand. The Carmelites vacated the property in 2009, and in 2013 Ales and the Neckers began their renovation work that would become a two year project. The result of that work is nothing short of amazing, but it requires a personal visit to truly experience the history and modern transformation.

For those 50 and older, the Gold Coast Apartments are a unique community in an ideal and historic setting. There is ample parking and patio space, on-site storage, a full time on-site manager and a full time maintenance staff that is on-call 24/7. There is even a pet allowance for small cats or dogs up to 25 pounds. It’s a great place to make new friendships, and grandchildren will love to visit and watch the fireworks over the Mississippi River. There are many new stories to be told if you visit now!
