The Brewed Book – a New Hang-Out in the Hilltop Campus Village
A little over two years ago, father and son team Tony and Trevor Fuhs thought of opening a place dealing in used books and offering coffee. But their dream was more than a bookstore and coffee shop. They envisioned a place to “hang out”, meet with friends, play games, socialize while enjoying a cup o’ joe.
Tony said that they had looked at various locations but were drawn to the Hilltop Campus Village. They felt this location had the potential to be a great walk around shopping area. Having students at Palmer College and St. Ambrose close by would be a big plus.
In the spring of 2016 Tony and Trevor bought the vacant building at 1524 N Harrison. They knew it needed renovations, but once they got started, they realized it needed more work than they had initially thought. The renovations consisted of more than just a cosmetic redo. Structurally it needed two new exterior walls, a whole new front, many floor joists were replaced and a whole new floor was installed.
Now they can continue with their vision. They hope to see this place used as a gathering spot for friends to mingle, enjoy some coffee, read a book, study, use their tablets, play a board game or play cards. They see a multi-generational all-purpose hangout: students of all ages and residents; retirees and business people. There is even a raised stage area for open mic-night, or reading poetry and prose.
Their hours are Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. These may change once they get a feel for when people want to stop in.
Their bookshelves are filling up with a wide variety of hardbacks and paperbacks. If you are downsizing and have books to get rid of, they will accept donations.
They had their soft opening in mid-December. Already many local residents and friends have stopped by and have had very favorable comments about the venture. Sometime during this month of January they will have their Grand Opening. Follow them on facebook to get all of the details.
