During the Rock Island Library’s 125th anniversary in 1998, Augustana College professors offered the first set of Frieze Lectures on the authors carved in stone around the Main Library. Thirteen years later, the 2010 Frieze Lecture Series celebrates the 150th anniversary of Augustana College.

The annual event brings Augustana professors into the library for college lectures without tests or grades. The four-part series is at 2 p.m., on Thursdays, from Oct. 21 to Nov. 11 in the community room of the historic downtown library at 401 19th Street.

October 21: Augustana History, 1935 to 1975, with Thomas Tredway, seventh president of Augustana.

October 28: Treasures from the Augustana Art Collection, with Sherry C. Maurer, director of the Augustana Art Collection and the Centennial Hall gallery.

November 4: The Augustana Music Legacy, with Dr. James Lambrecht, professor of trumpet and director of bands at the college, speaking on the Augustana Symphonic Band.

November 11: Ivory Tower or Front Porch, with Dr. Roald Tweet, emeritus professor of English, speaking on the relationship between the college and its community.

The free lectures are followed by coffee and conversation. For more information, call the library at 309-732-7323 (READ) or go to www.rockislandlibrary.org.
