Support Groups and Informational Seminars

Quad Cities Alzheimer’s Association – A new support group is being planned. At the initial meeting the goal was to give everyone a chance to meet one another and to lay the foundation for the group going forward. The long range goal is to give participants a warm, welcoming, supporting place to share their experiences and stories with others who understand their journey. QC Breast Cancer Support Group (Iowa): First Tuesday of each month, from noon to 1 pm, Trinity at Terrace Park, 4500 Utica Ridge Road, Bettendorf. (Illinois): Third Wednesday of each month, noon to 1 pm at Butterworth Center, 1105-8th Street, Moline For women dealing with breast cancer or survivors of breast cancer. CASI Caregiver Support Group: Second Monday of each month 11 am- 1 pm, CASI, 1035 W Kimberly Road, Davenport. Hosted by Susan Kivisto, from Alternatives for Older Adults & Karen Coats, from Generations Agency on Aging. Cost: free.
Diabetes Support Group at Genesis: First Tuesday of each month, 11 am to Noon, Larson Center, Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis, IL Recommended for people with diabetes who are interested in receiving help with diabetes self-management. Cost: free. Registration: (309) 792-4389.
Grief Support Group – CASI 1035 W Kimberly Road 2nd and 4th Wednesdays 9:30-11 am. Hosted by Vicky Ertel. Donation accepted.
Life After Loss Support Group – Genesis Medical Center, Illini This group will meet on Thursdays from 10 – 11 am. Facilitated by a member of the Genesis Medical Center, Illini Spiritual Care Department. New members may join at any time. MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Support Group – A support group for people and family members with multiple sclerosis. Prostate Cancer: Us, Too, Greater Quad City Cancer Support Group – Support Group for those dealing with Prostate Cancer or who had prostate cancer. Group meets the 3rd Thursday of each month, except December from 7 – 9pm. Location alternates between Trinity Medical Center, 7th St. Campus and the Genesis Adler Health Education Center, 1236 E. Stroke Support Group – The Genesis Stroke Support Group brings together stroke survivors and their families in an atmosphere of caring and sharing to assist recovery. Zumba Gold Class – At CASI will meet every Wednesday from

Clinics and Classes
University of Iowa – Scott County Extension Women in Agriculture Seminar to be offered March 23rd at the iWireless ,1201 River Drive, Moline, IL 61265. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The conference will begin at 9:00 and will wrap up around 3:00 p.m.
The cost of the program will be $50 which will include a breakfast and a luncheon buffet. Registration materials must be received by March 1st. Any registrations received after March 1st will be $60. University of Illinois Master Gardeners Spring Series of Home Horticulture Set As homeowners begin to prepare plans for their spring and summer gardens, University of Illinois Extension has a great series of workshops to provide knowledge and inspiration. Sponsored by the Rock Island County Master Gardeners, the six series programs will place on Monday evenings from March 19 – April 23 from 7 – 9 pm at University of Illinois Extension, 321 West 2nd Ave., Milan, IL. Pre-registration is required. The cost is $5 per session or $25 for the series. ($3 or $15 for Illinois Master Gardeners.). Here’s what’s planned:
March 19 – Insect & Pest Management Ray Wolf, Scott County Master Gardeners. Ray will provide a general background on insect & spiders & integrated pest management concepts, then show & discuss the most common critters found in our houses, yards and gardens. After attending this class, you will be able to identify these common pests & determine whether treatment is warranted, and if so, what type of approach.
March 26 – There’s a Lady On The Phone & She Wants To Know About???- Water Gardens & More! Let Eastern Iowa Pond Society member, Jackie Allsup, give you the correct answers to questions regarding water gardens and goldfish & koi keeping, so that you’ll know what to tell others. She’ll go over the most common questions/problems and answer any new ones you may have been asked in the past. Jackie is a Certified Koi Health Advisor, a 16-year member of the EIPS, and a hopeless Koi fanatic.
April 2 – Don’t Blame The Plant! Martha Smith, University of Illinois Horticulture Educator. How many times do we blame a plant for doing poorly? Have you ever considered what that plant has to endure to survive? This program will help you look at things from the plant’ perspective. Weather, poor planting, impossible growing site… and what silly things people do to plants will all be considered and discussed.
April 9 – Common Tree Mistakes & Tree Q& A. Certified arborist Brian Jay with Davey Tree Expert Company has seen a lot in his 37 years in the tree business. He’ll advise you what to do and what not to do to keep your trees in tiptop shape and answer any tree-related questions you may have.
April 16 – Grow it! Cook it! Bake it! Learn how to take the bounty from your garden and turn it into lovingly home-cooked meals. Cathy Lafrenz, of Miss Effie’s fame, shares some of her favorite homegrown recipes including spinach bisque soup, herb bread and a dessert using a home canned product.
April 23 – What’s New In The Greenhouse? Gwen Coobs of Allen’s Grove Greenhouse will share the latest and greatest information on new plants varieties available for 2012. She’ll bring a few of her favorites from years past as well and talk about how to best utilize each plant in your container, garden or yard. Plants will be available for sale.
