Support Groups and Informational Seminars

Quad Cities Alzheimer’s Association – Below is a list of free, state-of-the-art classes we are offering in multiple locations on various dates and times. Please call (563) 324-1022 to register of for more information. Classes are designed for anyone directly impacted by Alzheimer’s and related illnesses, their families, friends, and professional care-givers.

1.“Alzheimer’s: The Basics.” A 90 minute class for anyone who wants a good, general understanding of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Tuesday, May 8, 1:30 – 3 pm, BHC Community Ed Center, 404 E. 3rd St., Kewanee, IL.

2.“Alzheimer’s: Q&A with an Expert.” A 90 minute class suitable for anyone with any question about Alzheimer’s and related dementias. A leading professional will give a brief presentation then use the rest of the class-time to field audience questions. Thursday, May 10, 10:30 am – Noon, Clinton Public Library, 318 10th Ave. S., Clinton, IA. Friday, May 18, 1:30 – 3 pm, Musser Public Library, 304 Iowa Ave., Muscatine, IA.

3.“Living with Alzheimer’s: For People with Dementia.” A 4-hour class specifically designed for people with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. This is a comprehensive class most suitable for those in the early stages. Primary caregivers are encouraged to attend too. Thursday, May 24, 1 – 5 pm, Bettendorf Public Library, 2950 Learning Campus Dr., Bettendorf, IA.

4. “Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s.” [class was in April]

5.“Caring for People in the Middle Stages of Alzheimer’s.” A 4-hour class designed for people caring for loved ones now in the middles stages of Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Thursday, May 31, 1 – 5 pm, Bettendorf Public Library, 2950 Learning Campus Dr., Bettendorf, IA.

6.“Caring for People in the Late Stages of Alzheimer’s.” A 3-hour class designed for people caring for loved ones now in the late stages of Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Friday, June 8, 1:30 – 4:30 pm, Musser Public Library, 304 Iowa Ave., Muscatine, IA. Friday, June 15, 1:30 – 4:30 pm, BHC Community Ed Center, 404 E. 3rd St., Kewanee, IL. QC Breast Cancer Support Group (Iowa): First Tues. of each month, from noon to 1 pm, Trinity at Terrace Park, 4500 Utica Ridge Road, Bettendorf. (Illinois): Third Wed. of each month, noon to 1 pm at Butterworth Center, 1105-8th Street, Moline For women dealing with breast cancer or survivors of breast cancer. Life After Loss Support Group – Genesis Medical Center, Illini This group will meet on Thursdays from 10 – 11 am. Facilitated by a member of the Genesis Medical Center, Illini Spiritual Care Department. New members may join at any time. MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Support Group – A support group for people and family members with multiple sclerosis. Prostate Cancer: Us, Too, Greater Quad City Cancer Support Group – Support Group for those dealing with Prostate Cancer or who had prostate cancer. Group meets the 3rd Thurs. of each month, except December from 7 – 9pm. Location alternates between Trinity Medical Center, 7th St. Campus and the Genesis Adler Health Education Center, 1236 E. ISU Extension Scott County (Iowa State) Master Gardener Summer Webinar Series
‘Garden Goodness’ Announced The Iowa Master Gardener program is offering a series of summer webinars. The series titled “Garden Goodness” will be hosted by Iowa State University Extension county offices on the fourth Tuesday of the month, May through August. Each session will provide information about vegetable gardening.
Dates, presenters and topics for the 2012 series are:
• May 22, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Ajay Nair – Growing Vegetables. Nair is an ISU Extension horticulture specialist.
• June 26, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Angie Tagtow – Food Gardening and Health; and 7:30-8:30 p.m. Denise Fikes – Glenwood’s Giving Garden.
• July 24, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Linda Naeve – Peoples Garden Project and Working with Youth; and 7:30-8:30 p.m. Cindy Haynes – Edible Ornamentals.
• August 28, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Angela Tedesco – Top Ten Sustainable Gardening Tips from Turtle Farm. “Salute to Seniors” Generations Area Agency on Aging and Senior Voice are reaching out to Iowa residents who may know someone who is 100 years or older and who would like to be honored at the centenarian recognition at the “Salute to Seniors” event on May 10h, 2012 at the Davenport Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds. Iowa Quad City area residents who will be 100 years of age by May 10, 2012 qualify for this special recognition. (If the person is unable to attend, a certificate and medallion will be mailed.) The Internet Players presents “The Guardian” A story about a boy named Charles who sparks a “green” revolution. The story is told in song, dance and puppetry.
