Home Care–Not Just for the Elderly

By Jan Lawrence
Choice Home Health Care

When home care is mentioned do you automatically think about who needs it?  Your neighbor who recently had knee surgery and her family lives out of town, your brother in law who can no longer go safely down the basement steps to do his laundry or your niece who is undergoing chemotherapy and needs the extra bit of help at home after treatments. Just like everything else, home care is changing and is no longer for the elderly, ill and homebound.

Home health care is one of the only sections of the health care landscape that is truly patient centered. It is designed to be flexible enough to meet the changing needs of a wide variety of patients and situations regardless of age. We all know someone who could use a little or a lot of help at home after a recent accident, surgery, medical treatment, or debilitating medical diagnosis.  It may be that taking care of household chores like house cleaning, grocery shopping or laundry have become too difficult or too tedious. Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia is a 24-hour, 7 days a week job. As a result, most caregivers reach a point when they realize they need to have help at home.

Choice Home Health Care opened its doors on May 1, 2014 ,and we are locally owned and operated. What sets us apart from other home care agencies in the Quad Cities? In the two years prior to opening our doors, we talked with community members and local health professionals and recognized a need for access to unique, personalized solutions for in-home care for all ages. We believe whole heartedly in the power of preventative medicine and the value of healing in one’s own home. Our team has a wealth of experience in both home health and other sectors of health care, which gives us the ability to provide services that compliment what the medical community already offers. We provide traditional home care services as well as solutions for those needing respite care, companionship, pre and post surgical care, help at home after an injury, hospital or nursing home stay, and household help for the new mom after the birth of a baby.

In the six months we have been open we have brought together an experienced, caring group of CNA’s with clients and families who lives are now more comfortable and less stressful. We have come to know Joe, who is recovering at home after a car accident which left him in a wheelchair and needing help with taking a shower safely, doing laundry and some other household chores.  He is anxious to get back to his normal routine and has come to realize that the care he gets each week will help him back to work more quickly.

And there is Alice, who wants to stay in her apartment as long as possible, but has some forgetfulness. Her family was concerned that she was losing weight and she was not taking care of herself as she once had. For now, her CNA visits every day, to make sure she has a shower and change of clothing, healthy home cooked meals, walks when the weather permits, and going out to lunch when she wants. She has gained weight, and the visits from her caregiver quickly became part of her daily routine. Her daughter can go to work knowing her mother is safe and still able to stay comfortably in her own home for a little longer.

Our goal is to relieve individuals and family of the full responsibilities of caring for their loved one or managing an health condition, either for a short length of time or long term.

We can provide safe, reliable, high quality care in the home, for as little as few times a week to every day.  Our offices are located at 2882 AAA Court in Bettendorf; we currently serve Scott, Muscatine, Clinton and Jackson counties.   Call us at 563-345-6530 for a complimentary assessment with one of our registered nurses.  Based on level of need, a customized care package will be created, then we will carefully select a team of caregivers who will provide care, be available to address any questions and concerns, and maintain watchful oversight of your situation.
