Here are some comments about hearing loss that I’ve heard:

The Hearing Impaired:
“I can hear others–I just need them to not mumble and talk right to me.”
“I hear the TV just fine because I can turn it to where I want it.”
“I hate it when everyone talks at the same time. I’m left out. ”
“Why put the effort into seeing people if they don’t put the effort to talking right?”

Spouse:
“I have to work so hard–talk louder, and run to her, every time I want to say anything. I can’t get up so easily with bad knees, and when I shout, it  feels like I’m mad. ”
“He gave up having breakfast with his friends because he can’t hear them when they talk. He’s really isolating himself. It makes me sad.”

Children:
“The TV is so loud that it literally gives me a headache. I don’t know how dad can stand it!”
“I don’t like talking to my parents because they don’t understand me. I can’t talk to them on the phone which makes me worried – what if something important is missed?”
“I wish mom would realize how hard I work just to talk to her. Her comments sometimes comes across like she has memory problems. I know she just can’t hear.”
“New hearing aids would be totally worth it if it could bring back my parents. They just don’t realize how much this has affected their grandchildren.”

Grandkids:
“Papa doesn’t really like to talk to me anymore.”
“Grandpa is mad at me because he talks so loud.”
” I don’t like getting so close to talk–it is wierd.”
If you see yourself in these comments, please get evaluated. Isolation, sadness, paranoia, and depression are common side effects of hearing loss.  Better hearing is possible with successful communication strategies and a solid treatment plan, including amplification. Ask a family member or  friend if you need help and call us today.
