THE PUBLISHER’S VIEW: Inner Thoughts and Comments

Do your children have children? Have you heard the comment “Grandparents raising Grandchildren.” Yes, times have changed. There are more single parent families and often less income to help the child to enjoy being a child.

Grandparents have contacted legislators trying to establish a law giving them rights to see their grandkids if the parents deny access to the children. The courts have nearly always supported the natural parent in these disputes. But every year the news has more sad stories on murder and suicide in families.

Being a grandparent myself, I have seen the importance of grandparents being present in the lives of grandchildren. Parents today, whether married or single, often make less money, and there are more activities for children to be involved in both in and out of school. There is a greater need for volunteers in children’s programs at Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brother and Sister, Juvenile Court, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, RME music programs and many more organizations.

There are many programs available to help families, but none of them are better than help from grandfather and grandmother. We have all heard of the famous line, “I am busier now being retired than when I was working.” You like playing Bingo or playing cards, but think about what you could do to help your grandchild prepare for a good adult life. They could read better or gain more knowledge of math and history because you took them to visit a place where history was made. Knowledge is wisdom, and age gives us some wisdom to share.

For the kids’ sake, give a gift that we have less of everyday…”OUR TIME”
