You’ll be head over heels for this new shop in the Hilltop!

Flipped-Out-Furn-interior-1    Flipped Out Furniture is one of the newest arrivals in our fast-growing Hilltop Campus Village. Becky Despeghel and her father Dave Sawvell are the owners and creators of some of the most wonderfully designed re-purposed pieces of furniture and accessories. Located at 1517 Harrison Street, this little space carries a big impact on fabulous finds. One of a kind originals are the result of Becky and her dad’s creative nature, seeing something in a disguarded piece, that with their hard work and skills becomes a beautiful new element in someone’s home.

The Freight House farmers market was the first testing ground for Becky, to see if the demand for her pieces was as strong as she sensed it would be. When she and her father started, they were just doing pieces for themselves, redesigning some elements in Becky’s home with the intention of saving money and being Earth friendly. Being a budget-conscious mom and military wife, Becky wanted to have a unique style but wasn’t willing to pay the big dollars needed to furnish the rooms to her desires. Dave had always worked with wood as a hobby, and as Becky grew, she too started to develop her skills and knowledge of woods and tools.  And skills she does have, this girl KNOWS her woods! Maple, oak, walnut …you won’t fool Becky as she appreciates the medium she and her father work in. The smell of a fresh cut piece of  lumber is the best aroma therapy Becky  can experience!

Her darling shop is a full family business. Mom does the accessorizing for the store, sewing pillows, staging pieces, arranging flowers all with the intention of highlighting the work her husband and daughter churn out. Becky’s children are also a part of this adventure. Daughter Sydney, now 12, is the painter of the group. Sons Peyton, age 11 and Jackson, age 8 are also a part of the assembly line, working power sanders in the drive as mom oversees all the elements that bring together her family and her work. Even husband Derek, when he is home on the weekends from serving in the Army, will go treasure hunting with his wife, scouring old barns and sales all over the state of Iowa, looking for their next great creation.

Construction on Harrison Street has been completed, and now it’s easier than ever to get to her shop. Open Fri, Sat. and Sunday, you can find Flipped Out Furniture on Facebook for more details and store hours.  Becky’s love for Iowa, strong creative skills, and her conservation efforts combine for a result of one of a kind pieces that you will flip for!
