Aged to Perfection

By Laura Kopp

Like a fine wine, we all hope our “aging process” leaves us more palatable. That we have more depth, less bitterness and a colorful bouquet of flavor! Ok, maybe not. But we all hope to continue growing and perfecting our individuality as we age. The journey doesn’t stop at 18 when we officially become an adult, or at 62 when we “officially” become a senior. This journey is life long and we are better for it.

Research shows that adults who are active and open to new experiences, tend to report greater life satisfaction and describe themselves as “aging successfully.”

So what is “perfection” or “success” as it relates to aging? Well certainly, successful aging is no longer defined simply by the lack of illness or disease as in years past. Many of us have chronic illnesses and diseases impacting our daily lives. Yet many of us would still describe our lives as fulfilling and our aging process as successful. So how is aging successfully defined? In its most simple terms, successful aging refers to physical, mental and social well-being in older age.

Staying connected and challenging both the mind and the body to remain strong as we age. This might look very different from one individual to another based on age, co-existing health concerns, hereditary factors, and many other varied influences. The bottom line is that aging successfully is achieved when we remain active and engaged in our own lives. Staying curious, engaging in new experiences, connecting with others and giving back to our communities.

In May, CASI will celebrate older adults in our community who have mastered the art of aging and who have made an impact in our community. We hope you will join us on May 11th for our inaugural Aged to Perfection event.

Here we will honor Quad Citizens – individuals, organizations, and businesses who embrace older adults and how they enhance our region continuing to make it a cool, creative place to live, work and play.
