The Colors of October

By Eloise Graham

October is full of rich vibrant colors. The marigold, a small flower whose color ranges from a light yellow to deep gold to brilliant orange to almost a rust color, is one of this month’s flower. The other flower of the month is the cosmos, a delicate lavender to purple-pink flower with a yellow center. Both flowers are great border flowers in for the garden. They are easy to grow and have a long blooming season. Marigolds are often given as a sign of warm or fierce undying love or as a way of saying that you’re content to be with the recipient. Cosmos are a symbol of order, peace, and serenity. Cosmos will attract birds, bees, and butterflies to your garden.

Other deep-toned flowers that are often used in October weddings include Asiatic lily, celosia, dahlia, orange gerbera, purple alstroemeria, calla lily, and chrysanthemum. The complementary colors of oranges and purples make for beautiful floral arrangements.

Individuals born in October get to choose between two birthstones—tourmaline and opal. Each gem then unveils nearly limitless possibilities, as each one comes in a rainbow of shades and color combinations. The opal comes in a variety of colors: pink, blue, purple, black, green, grey, yellow, brown, red and orange. Opals are not a solid color, but an iridescent stone with many colors showing. For example, a black opal will contain flecks of reds, oranges, greens, yellows and blues. Tourmaline is a crystalline boron silicate mineral compounded with elements such as aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. Tourmaline is classified as a semi-precious stone and the gemstone comes in a wide variety of colors. Because the stone contains differing amounts of other compound elements, it comes in a variety of hues. Its colors include green, pink, blue, purple, black, white, grey, yellow, brown, red and orange.
