Zoom, Zooming, Zoomed – Staying Connected

Once upon a time the word “zoom” was used in comic books along with POW and BAM. Eventually, it did make it into the dictionary. As a verb, it means to move or travel very quickly. Or it can be used when talking about camera shots, as in “zooming in” or “zooming out.” As a noun, it is often used in reference to the camera shot or the zoom button. Well, that was all before 2020.

Now zoom has become an everyday word. Zoom and other video conferencing sites have become a way of staying connected in business and civic clubs that no longer meet in person. Zoom is an app that allows computers, laptops, and phones to be connected with one another, with video, from places all across the country, even the world.

For the senior population that has been sheltering in place most of this year, Zoom or other video chatting links have been essential in keeping connected with family and friends. For those with computers, it is easy to set up and stay connected. Many senior living facilities will help their residents make virtual
connections with family.

Besides Zoom, which presently is at no cost as long as your visit doesn’t exceed 40 minutes, Facebook offers video chatting on its Messenger page. There is also video chatting on smartphones. However, the phone is usually only one on one. Zoom will allow many participants from different locations to be together all at once. Google Meet is another video chatting site.
