A Pause for Poetry

By Gary Heath
Poet in Residence for 50+ Lifestyles.

Scales

The scales, they sway in the breeze,
They waver, they shake in the
Storms through the years and over
The millennia. The scales rebel,
They try to even out and balance
For the people, the scales that
Weigh our lives, yet never balance,
Oh for so many people, the scales
Are out of balance.

American Rushmore

Carve the face of an American,
Apotheosis of our commonweal,
Carve an American who hews
To the good life, who hews best
From among us, on this mountain.
Sculpt a humble face amid lofty
Personages, sculpt the visage of
One who serves family, nation,
One of the many of us, humble
Equals of our great land. We
Serve faceless, select a face among
Us, and let us sculpt that face high
In stone. Let America sculpt the
Face of one among us on that lofty
Mount, so the sun shines on that
Face, our equal blazoned on high
Rock frieze of presidential glory.
