New Year, New You? Redefining Resolutions for the Over 60 Crowd

For many of us, the arrival of a new year sparks the urge to embark on a journey of self-improvement. But as we get older, the traditional “new year, new you” mantra may not quite resonate.

Instead of feeling pressured to conform to rigid resolutions, let’s reframe our approach to this transformative period. Here’s a guide to navigating the new year with intention and purpose:

Shifting Focus from “New” to “Renewed”

Rather than focusing on radical or unrealistic changes, emphasize the concept of “renewing” yourself. This shift in mindset acknowledges the richness of experiences you’ve accumulated while embracing the potential for continued growth and development. As Dr. Laura Carstensen, a Stanford University psychologist who studies aging, notes, “Many older adults experience a shift in their priorities from external goals to internal goals, such as personal growth, spirituality, and relationships.”

Prioritize Health and Well-being

Physical and mental well-being are essential for living a fulfilling life. Engage in activities you enjoy, whether it’s tai chi, taking a walk, swimming, or dancing. Remember, small but consistent steps toward a healthier lifestyle can have a significant impact. Milestones Area Agency on Aging promotes a variety of wellness programs dedicated to building healthy lifestyles through education, counseling, and a variety of fitness and wellness classes. Give Back to Others

Volunteering is a rewarding way to make a difference in your community and contribute to something meaningful. Sharing your skills and knowledge with others can foster a sense of purpose and connect you with like-minded individuals.

Volunteers are needed in every community Milestones serves and there are several ways to offer your time.  Volunteer roles include meal delivery, kitchen assistance, and office help. If you are willing to donate even a few hours per month call Milestones at (855)-410-6222.

Focus on Gratitude

Taking the time to appreciate the good things in life, big and small, can significantly enhance your happiness and overall well-being. Cultivate gratitude by keeping a gratitude journal, expressing your appreciation to loved ones, or simply taking a moment each day to reflect on your blessings. As Dr. Robert Emmons, a University of California, Davis psychologist, notes, “Gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness, better health, stronger relationships, and more.”

Remember, the journey of self-improvement is not about drastic change, but about continuous growth and development. Embrace your journey with optimism, self-compassion, and a willingness to try new things.
