The Colors of September
By Eloise Graham
Editor-in-Chief
September’s colors include a mix of summer’s end and fall’s beginning. Deep blues, browns, rusts, green, gold and purple are the colors that come to mind when thinking of September. The deep blue of the sapphire and the azure September sky come to mind when you think blue. Shades of brown and rust make us think of stability, security and the earth. Greens, including olive, avocado and emerald, reflect the transition to fall. Golds and purples add a touch of sophistication.

*The padparadscha sapphire is a rare and exotic gem that blends shades of pink and orange, resembling the beauty of a sunset. Prices for this gem range from $1,755 to 48,916.
The birthstone for September is the Sapphire. This gem is usually thought of as a brilliant royal blue stone, but it does come in a variety of colors: black, orange, peach, padparadscha*, violet, purple, white, yellow, green, teal and pink. The chemical make-up of the sapphire is aluminum oxide, with the chemical formula Al3O2. This means it’s composed of two atoms of aluminum and three atoms of oxygen. The coloring of the sapphire, whether it’s blue, yellow, pink or another color is determined by trace amounts of other elements present during its formation. The blue sapphire gets its color from traces of iron and titanium.
Sapphires are known for their beauty, durability, and the rich symbolism associated with them. Traditionally sapphires have symbolized sincerity, truth, faithfulness, nobility and wisdom.
The flowers associated with September are the morning glory and the aster. Both are associated with September because they bloom during this month. The also carry symbolic meanings related this month’s transition from summer to autumn. Asters are known for their star-like shape and vibrant colors. Asters come in various colors including red, purple and white. Morning glories are known for their trumpet-shaped flowers and their tendency to open in the morning. They too come in different colors.
