Caregiving 101: Supporting an Older Adult
Annual Caregiver Conference, hosted by Milestones Area Agency on Aging, will be held on Saturday, November 8
By Milestones Area Agency on Aging
Caring for an older adult often begins with small tasks—helping with errands, making meals, or giving rides to appointments. Over time, responsibilities may expand to include managing medications, coordinating medical visits, and providing emotional support. For many, caregiving is both rewarding and challenging.
The first step in effective caregiving is learning about the needs of the person you’re supporting. This can mean understanding a new medical diagnosis, adjusting the home for safety, or finding ways to make daily routines easier. Simple changes—such as using a pill organizer, installing grab bars in the bathroom, or creating a list of emergency contacts—can prevent stress for both the caregiver and the older adult.
Another key element is recognizing the importance of self-care. Caregivers often put their own health aside while focusing on others. Taking regular breaks, reaching out to family or friends for help, and staying connected to community resources are essential steps to avoid burnout.
Education and connection can make a difference. This year’s 14th Annual Caregiver Conference, hosted by Milestones Area Agency on Aging, provides practical tools and training for family caregivers. The event will be held Saturday, November 8, at the Golden Leaf Banquet Center in Davenport from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
The theme, Caregiver Training Camp, includes five skills tables where caregivers can practice hands-on techniques, short demonstrations throughout the morning, and a Caregiver Café for conversation and support.
The conference is free for caregivers to attend and will feature local experts, resources, and services that can help lighten the load of daily care. Whether you are new to caregiving or have been supporting a loved one for years, the event is designed to provide encouragement and practical takeaways.
Caring for an older adult is a journey that no one should have to take alone. By learning new skills, connecting with resources, and finding support, caregivers can provide safe and compassionate care while maintaining balance in their own lives.
