August – A Month for Weddings

August is the second most popular month for weddings, just barely being beaten out of first place by June. August claims to have 10.4 percent of the weddings, while June squeaks ahead at 10.6 percent. The other months range from January with 4.7 percent to May with 9.8 percent.
Some August weddings of note:

• Charles, Count of Valois, marries 17 year old Margaretha
van Anjou, the Countess of Anjou. Wedding day is the 16th of August, 1290.

Mary of Burgundy

• Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, weds Mary of Burgundy, the heiress to the Duchy of Burgundy in Ghent, Belgium on the evening of August 16, 1477.

• Paul Revere, famed American Patriot, weds Sara Orne on August 4, 1757 in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

• On August 4 in 1782, musician Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart weds Constanze Weber in St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, Austria.

• Inventor Charles Goodyear marries Clarissa Beecher on August 3, 1824.

• Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick, marries Elizabeth Shaw, daughter of Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court. They wed on August 4,1847.

• Inventor Samuel Morse, age 57, weds Sarah Elizabeth Griswold in Utica, New York on August 10, 1848.

• Inventor Ferdinand von Zepplin weds Isabella Frelin von Wolff from the house of Alt-Schwaneburg August 7, 1869.

• Education pioneer Booker T. Washington weds Fanny Smith on August 2, 1882.

• Cecil B DeMille, at the age of 21, marries Constance Adams, a 28 year-old actress, on August 16, 1902.

• Curly Lambeau, founded the Green Bay Packers on August 11, 1919, marries his high school sweetheart, Marguerite Van Kessel on August 16, 1919.

• Nineteen year-old actress Hedy Lamar marries Friedrich Mandl on August 10, 1933.

• Animator William Hanna weds Violet Blanch Wogatzke on August 7, 1936.

• Actress Janet Leigh, at age 14, weds childhood sweetheart John Kenneth Carlisle, age 18, on August 1, 1942 in Reno, Nevada

• Latin music king Xavier Cugat, age 60, marries singer Charo, age 20, on August 7, 1966 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

• Contemporary singer, Madonna, marries actor Sean Penn on August 16,1985.

• Academy award-winning actor Nicolas Cage weds “Princess of Rock and Roll” Lisa Marie Presley at the Mauna Lani Bay on the Big Island of Hawaii on August 10, 2002.
