  • July 1st, 1963:  ZIP Code introduced for United States mail
  • July 2nd, 1962: First Wal-Mart opened for business in Rogers, Arkansas
  • July 3rd, 1986: U.S. President Ronald Reagan presides over the relighting of the renovated Statue of Liberty
  • July 4th, 1838: The Iowa Territory was organized
  • July 5th, 1946:  Bikini is introduced in Paris, France
  • July 6th, 1854: First Republican Party Convention was held in Jackson, Michigan
  • July 7th, 1928: Sliced bread was sold for the first time by the Chillicothe Baking Company in Missouri
  • July 8th, 1932: Dow Jones Industrial Average reached it lowest level of the Great Depression bottoming out at 41.22
  • July 9th, 1922: Johnny Weismuller swam the 100 meter freestyle in 58.6 seconds breaking the record and the minute barrier
  • July 10th, 1962: Telstar, the world’s first communications satellite was launched into orbit
  • July 11th, 1955: In God We Trust was added to all U.S. currency
  • July 12th, 1862:  Medal of Honor was authorized by the United States Congress
  • July 13th, 1923:  Hollywood Sign was officially dedicated in the hills above Hollywood, Los Angeles which was originally Hollywoodland
  • July 14th, 1881: Billy the Kid was shot and killed by Pat Garrett outside of Fort Sumner
  • July 15th, 1870: Georgia became the last former Confederate state to be readmitted to the Union
  • July 16th, 1790: District of Columbia was established as the capital of the United States
  • July 17th, 1955: Disneyland televised its grand opening in Anaheim, California
  • July 18th, 1969: Senator Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts drove an Oldsmobile off a wooden bridge and his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, drowned and he did nothing to save her; only a Kennedy in Massachusetts would not be sent to jail
  • July 19th, 1989: United Airlines flight 232 crashed in Sioux City, Iowa killing 112 of the 296 passengers
  • July 20th, 1969: Apollo 11 successfully landed the first man on the Moon
  • July 21st, 1969: Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon
  • July 22nd, 2003: Members of 101st Airborne of the United States, aided by Special Forces attacked a compound In Iraq killing Saddam Hussein’s sons and a bodyguard
  • July 23rd, 1903: Ford Motor Company sold its first car
  • July 24th, 1866: Tennessee became the first U.S. state to be readmitted following the American Civil War
  • July 25th: 1603: James VI of Scotland was crowned the first king of Great Britain
  • July 26th, 1775: Established by the Second Continental Congress was what later would become United States Post Office Dept.
  • July 27th, 1940: Animated short “AWild Hare” was released introducing Bugs Bunny
  • July 28th, 1945: U.S. Army B-25 bomber crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building killing 14 and injuring 26
  • July 29th, 1907: Sir Robert Baden Powell set up the Brownsea Island Scout camp in Poole Harbour on the south coast of England; the camp ran from August 1-9, 1907 and is regarded as the founding of the Scouting movement
  • July 30th, 1990: First Saturn automobile rolled off the assembly line
  • July 31st, 1930: Radio mystery program “The Shadow” aired for the first time
