Is the Mouth Connected to the Body?

By Carole Ferch, RDH, I-Smile Silver Coordinator
Scott County Health Department

Why YES it is! In fact, the health of your mouth greatly impacts the rest of your body. For example, germs from an unclean mouth can enter the blood stream through infected gums and cause problems with other organ systems. Many studies have shown that poor oral health can increase the risks for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia, and even arthritis.

Oral health is important at any age because your teeth allow you to eat a variety of foods, as well as speak and smile with confidence. Indeed, a person feels better when they have a clean mouth! The I-Smile™ Silver Coordinator is a dental hygienist who is available as a resource for older Iowans in Scott County. The coordinator works locally to promote oral health and deliver education for seniors, their caregivers and their health care professionals. The I-Smile™ Silver coordinator also works to link people to dentists for dental care.

Daily oral care and six-month visits to your dentist will improve the health of your teeth and gums as well as the rest of your body. Take an active part in your health and well-being today!
