Why does my dentist need to know my medical history?

Your mouth is connected to the rest of your body and certain diseases, like diabetes, can affect your teeth and gums.  Likewise, diseases in your mouth, such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and tooth decay can affect your overall health.

Why is it important for my dentist to know what medications I am taking?

Many medications cause oral side effects including dry mouth. Your dentist or hygienist may be able to help you manage your symptoms.

Does Medicare cover dental expenses?

Medicare typically does not include dental coverage. However, some Medicare Advantage plans have the option to purchase a dental benefit plan.

What should I consider when deciding whether to purchase dental insurance?

If you choose to purchase a policy, it is important to know that typical dental plans are not designed to cover all dental procedures, and coverage is limited to a yearly maximum dollar amount.  Be aware that along with paying your monthly premium, you will likely have additional out of pocket expenses if you need to have teeth restored.  Many plans do cover cleanings, x-rays and exams with minimal additional fees.

Are there dental resources for seniors?

Yes!  You can call the I-Smile™ Silver Coordinator at the Scott County Health Department at 563-326-8618 and she can link you to dental referrals, resources and education.
