Become a “Super-Ager”

By Milestones Area Agency on Aging

Staying active and engaged as we age can not only add years to our lives, but also make those years richer and more fulfilling. This is the message from a recent Northwestern University study of people known as “Super-Agers” – individuals who live exceptionally long and healthy lives, typically over 80 years old.

So, what are the secrets of these Super-Agers? The good news is that there’s no single magic formula. Instead, it’s a combination of healthy habits that keep them physically and mentally sharp. Let’s explore some of these habits that you can incorporate into your own life:

  • Embrace Movement: Regular physical activity is a cornerstone of healthy aging. Whether it’s a brisk walk in the park, a refreshing swim, or a gentle yoga session, find activities you enjoy and stick with them. Milestones AAA offers Tai Chi and other classes that are open to all. Visit MilestonesAAA.org for class information.
  • Be Social: Staying socially active is just as crucial as physical fitness. Don’t shy away from new experiences! Learn a new language, pick up a creative hobby, or delve into books that pique your curiosity. According to the Mayo Clinic, social interaction is another brain booster, so spend time with loved ones, join clubs, or volunteer in your community. Consider having a meal at one of the Milestones Congregate meal sites.
  • Consider a Side Gig: Just because you might be retired or out of the work-force, you can still make money online. The Mayo Clinic says that older Americans who continue working jobs they enjoy, or hobbies, have better mental health. Sell a quilt, consult a business owner, or fill out online surveys. There are many options available via online searches.
  • Challenge Your Mind: Dive into mind-bending puzzles, tackle sudoku squares, or battle friends in classic video games. Even daily crosswords or word searches keep your cognitive gears humming, boosting memory, focus, and that lightning-fast wit. Remember, lifelong learning is the ultimate age-defying elixir, so keep those neurons dancing with mental challenges.

Remember, it’s never too late to embrace healthy habits. By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you can take control of your well-being and unlock the potential for a longer, happier, and more fulfilling life, just like the Super-Agers.
